Configuring Microsoft Windows XP PDF Print E-mail

This chapter contains the following information:

  • Overview

This chapter will give a brief overview on configuring Microsoft Windows XP for maximum accessibility.

Overview

In addition to completing the above listed steps, Microsoft Windows XP is configured by default to include its own accessibility features. While these tools and utilities are nowhere near as comprehensive as the other tools provided to OSU, these utilities can be used in a pinch to provide narrow access to specific disabilities. In the interest of providing the most broad range of accessibility, it is highly recommended that these utilities be included on any default installation of Windows.

It’s also a good idea to visit the Windows XP PowerToys page to get the ClearType Tuner and the Taskbar Magnifier, both of which are free downloads and may help improve the readability of the screen in some environments. The Windows XP PowerToys page is available at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

More information about multiple different configuration options for improving Windows desktop accessibility, including information on how to configure the tools built into Windows, is available at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/default.mspx

Other configuration information regarding the Windows XP desktop is beyond the scope of this document. While the basic information here should be sufficient in most cases, please use the Contact Us section to gather more information.
