Getting Started

  1.  If the computer you are using has the icon, please double-click the “Assistive Technology Loader” icon.

  2. You will be presented with a screen explaining the login process and providing information about the AT Loader. The AT Loader will guide you through the process of logging in and selecting your software. Any software currently installed on the computer at the time of the installation, or after every 30 days, will be updated on the radio button list. To update this list, you will need to access the menu items, which are, at the time of this revision of this guide, currently inaccessible. You will be required to login with your O-Key e-mail address and password. This information can be found on your O-Key page. If you have trouble finding this information, please visit http://okey.okstate.edu or contact the IT Helpdesk.
  3. You can Tab through each field to get to O-Key Email Address, O-Key Password, and the software selection area. When you are done inputting this information, you can tab to the “Start” button, which will log you in and automatically start your software. This may take a few moments.
  4. When you are done using your software, return to the AT Loader, exit the AT software you were using, and click either “Logout” or “Exit” to properly ensure that you are logged out of the computer and to prevent a malicious user from accessing your settings after you. For best results, restart the computer.

Using JAWS

When you first load JAWS, you may be logged in as Guest. To change your login, press the “Alt” key, and follow the “Options” menu down until you reach the option “Change JAWS login.” You will be presented with a drop-down list of usernames. Select yours from the list, and input your password. If this password doesn’t work, please contact our office for more information.

Changing Voice Settings

JAWS will allow you to set your voice-rate, volume, and a few other options from the main window, without having to go into the configuration editor. To get there, hit ALT + O at the JAWS screen, and jump down to “Voices.” To change the default voice rate, volume, pitch, and other options for all programs, select “Global Adjustment”. There is an option in this window to change only the currently used program, as well, so don’t fret if you’ve wound up in the wrong window.

Finding Help & More Information

It is recommended that any new user of JAWS utilize the Tutorial section, and also listen to the JAWS Basic Training, available in audio format on Freedom Scientific’s website at: http://www.freedomscientific.com/Training/JAWS_training_hq.asp

Online Help

Online Help is available at any time by pressing INSERT + J, which activates the JAWS application window, and pressing the F1 key. Alt + H will open the Help menu, allowing you to explore other help options.

Keystroke Help

As you learn keystrokes, Jaws Keyboard Help is a beneficial tool.  It gives information on key combinations while you are working in any application.  To activate the Jaws Keyboard Help, press INSERT + 1.  Jaws then says, “Keyboard help on.”  Press any key combination to hear what it will do, and an informational synopsis of the use of the keys.  Obtain a more extensive description of the Jaws keys by holding down the first key or keys in the combination and pressing the last key twice quickly.  If the Jaws command contains only one key, press this key twice quickly.  For example, to get Help on the Say-All command you would press INSERT + Down-Arrow + Down-Arrow.  While Keyboard Help is activated, keystrokes that you press do not actually perform any action.  Press INSERT+1 again to turn off Keyboard Help, and continue working. For information on Windows keystrokes, press INSERT + W, which provides Help on some commonly used Windows application keystrokes.
